Date and Oat Energy Balls

I had some extra time this afternoon since it was a running rest day, so I made some homemade running fuel/snacks.  I’ve had a bag of pitted dates here and have been looking for a new way to use them other than in my oatmeal, so I thought I’d try to make some homemade protein snacks!  When I make things like this I usually don’t measure exactly and they still turn out good, so here is how I made them…


Natural peanut butter (I love Crazy Richards), coconut flakes, honey, pitted dates, semi-sweet chocolate chips, milled flax seed.

Approximate Measures:

1/2 cup peanut butter

1 cup oats

1/4 cup coconut flakes

1/3 cup chocolate chips

1/2 cup milled flax

8 pitted dates chopped

2-4 TBS honey


Mix all ingredients except for honey.


Get in there with your hands and add the honey 1 TBS at a time until it sticks together.  Form into balls and place in fridge.  It is a very messy process, but worth it!  Refrigerate so that they stick together even more.  I sometimes even put things like this in the freezer.

I was able to make 18 from this batch.


I think these will be good for before, during, or even after a run. Let me know if you try them!  I am trying to add dates to my diet.  I love that they are a good source of potassium as that is something I always try to get a lot of in my diet, and sweet potatoes and bananas get boring after awhile!  Read this article for more benefits of eating dates.

    Check out Tons of date products and recipes. Date syrup, date syrup sweetened chocolate sauce and caramel sauce, etc. It’s good stuff! I keep a bottle of date syrup on hand all the time.

      Thanks for sharing! I bet the syrup would be good on pancakes too. The balsamic one even sounds good. I may have to try something from there 🙂
